Don't Just Vote—Vote Wisely
Good day, brothers and sisters! In a world where elections are increasingly high-stakes battles, it's easy to get swept up in the noise or become overwhelmed. Party loyalty? A candidate's charisma or good hair? Those aren't good reasons to cast your ballot. As Christians, we're called to something higher: voting with wisdom, discernment, and alignment to God's Word. If you're already a pro at this, great—pass this along to a friend who might need it. Because let's face it: showing up to vote in times such as these is crucial, but how we vote matters even more. We love our neighbors, and how we vote shapes our communities, our states, and our nation. Today, I'm sharing six straightforward steps to help you vote intelligently. These aren't quick fixes; they're a roadmap to honoring God at the polls.
Step 1: Immerse Yourself in God's Word—Read the Bible Cover to Cover
Our foundation for everything, including voting, is Scripture. It's not just a book; it's literally God’s gift of guidance to us. If you're like way too many Christians in America, and you are not already familiar with it from Genesis to Revelation, now's the time to start.
Pro tip: Kick off a "Bible in a Year" plan. Apps, podcasts, and printed guides make it doable—even if the next election is knocking on the door. The point isn't cramming; it's committing. Resources like YouVersion or The Bible Project have free plans to get you rolling. Get in the habit, and watch how God's truth sharpens your perspective on every issue and life circumstance.
Step 2: Get to Know the Issues—From National Headlines to Local Ballots
Voting blindly is like navigating without a map. So, first, figure out what matters this cycle. What are Americans fired up about? Economy? Immigration? Education? Healthcare? Probably more importantly, what’s happening in your town? Tax levies? School board elections? State Representatives up for election? What happens locally will affect you immediately. What happens Nationally might not affect you for years down the road. Then you need to find out what each candidate up for election is running on. Are they prioritizing what matters most to us, or are they out of touch? Again I’m not just talking about the Presidential race, I’m talking all the way down to the local level.
Start simple: Hit up multiple search engines—Google, Brave, or even FreeSpoke—for unbiased overviews. (Diversifying your sources keeps things balanced. We might not agree with a liberal news source but it’s important to know what the other side is thinking) Once you've got a good grasp of the big-picture issues, and who is running for what position, drill down:
- Presidential and national candidates: From President to Congress, who wants you to help send them to Washington D.C.? Visit each candidate's campaign website and read about what they are campaigning on. What is their stance on the issues?
- Local level: Pull up your sample ballot online (your State's secretary of state website has it). Check state reps, senators, school board members—who's running, and what do they stand for? Visit their campaign pages.
- Party platforms: No matter your affiliation, read the official stances. GOP? DNC? Libertarian? Independent? See the core issues each party prioritizes.
Pro tip: If you really want to get into the weeds, research the incumbents (the person who already holds the office seeking reelection) voting record and see if their voting record on the issues matches what they claim to stand for on their website. This will tell you a lot about a politician's integrity.
Step 3: Discover What the Bible Says About These Issues
Now, it’s time to bridge the gap: Take those hot-button topics and cross-reference them with Scripture. What does God say about abortion, immigration, taxation, justice, welfare, etc.? You don't have to be a theologian (yet!). Quick online searches like "Bible verses on [issue]" work wonders. Or, if you're old-school like me and love flipping pages, grab a resource like The A to Z Guide to Finding It in the Bible. It's a lifesaver—alphabetized topics with direct verses ready to go. Abortion (AKA murder)? Immigration? Taxes? Flip to the letter, read the passages, and ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate your understanding.
Remember, the Bible isn't silent on real-world stuff. It's packed with principles for wise governance (think Proverbs and Romans 13).
Step 4: Align Your Heart and Mind with Biblical Truth
Here's where transformation happens. You've seen the issues; you've seen God's take. Now, realign your views to match His because at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what our worldly view about something is. What matters is what God says about it.
Maybe you held a strong opinion on something—say, environmental policy or government welfare—and Scripture flips the script. That's okay! Obeying God isn't optional; it's our calling. Disobeying? That's sin, plain and simple.
This step is about surrender: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105). Let it reshape your ethics, values, and yes, your vote. It's not about politics; it's about submission to the King.
Step 5: Vet Your Candidates—Compare and Contrast with Scripture
Buckle up—this is a grinding and tedious step. This can be time-consuming, and it's what separates casual voters from kingdom-minded ones. If we want to steward this nation well, if we want to bring Christian principles back to America, we've got to do it.
Grab that sample ballot again. For every candidate, map their positions against the biblical principles you uncovered in Steps 3 and 4. Use their websites, debate transcripts, or voter guides from trusted Christian orgs like Focus on the Family or My Faith Votes.
Spoiler Alert: NO candidate will align 100% with Scripture, but be ruthlessly honest in your evaluation:
- Candidate A sounds great on TV, but only aligns 10% with Scripture on key issues? Pass.
- Candidate B? Imperfect yes (Jesus isn't on the ballot), but 60% alignment? That's your lever to pull.
You'll be surprised—maybe shocked—at the mismatches. But this due diligence honors God and guards against deception.
Step 6: Act on It—Go Vote!
You've done the work. You studied, prayed, aligned, and evaluated. Now, the finale: Do it. Head to the polls, fill out that ballot, and vote your values—rooted in the Rock.
Final Thoughts: Vote Like Your Faith Depends on It (Because Our Nation Does)
Brothers and sisters, intelligent voting isn't optional—it's obedience in action. It starts with us but ripples out to our families, churches, and country. If this doesn't apply to you, share it with someone who needs the nudge. Let's equip each other to be salt and light at the ballot box.
